Glock 42 Mag Capacity - Prior to 2014, Glock had not released a new pistol design since the turn of the century. Here we are almost a year later and just about every blogger, magazine writer, and YouTube channel in the gun world has thrown in their two cents on the Glock 42. That initial onslaught has finally cooled and the shooting circle has had its chance. judge the Glock 42 for what it is, not what it wants to be.

Since rehashing the specs and features of this pistol isn't news at this point, I'll save my usual routine review details for last and proceed directly to the Glock 42.

My first experience with the new Glock was this past January at the SHOT Show. The demo pistol was allowed to fire one round, which did not seem to work at first. But it was enough to get a clear picture of what the Glock is doing, which I described in my Glock 42 SHOT Show mini-review. Instead of making the smallest .380 ACP on the market, it looks like Glock instead decided to make one that would actually be easy to shoot.

In September, I finally picked up a Glock 42 for a real review, and in the 500 or so rounds I've fired since then, my initial impression of SHOT Show hasn't really changed much. It looks bigger than the ultra-compact .380 pocket pistols that have become popular in recent years, but I think it might be the smallest and lightest centerfire pistol I can comfortably carry all day.

An Overview Of The Glock 42: One Of The Smallest Handguns On The Market

Despite some complaints about the G42's size, it's still smaller than most carry pistols in the biggest category—single-stack subcompact 9x19mm semiautos like the Beretta Nano or the S&W Shield. During one of my epic 9mm carry gun comparison test sessions, I brought along a Glock 42 to see how it measured up. I'm a big fan of the little nine, but the rather bouncy recoil takes effort and practice to learn to handle in rapid fire. It's no surprise that shooters who don't go to the range regularly have a hard time hitting the target quickly with these guns.

After getting to know one small 9mm, switching to a Glock 42 feels like cheating. With almost no effort, the front sight simply returns to the target after each shot. If all centerfire calibers were equally effective for self-defense, the favorable combination of small size and light recoil found in the Glock 42 would instantly render dozens of other handguns that are either harder to shoot or harder to carry obsolete.

But not all handgun calibers are equally effective, and the .380 ACP is on the lower end of the curve. Unfortunately, we cannot measure the hypothetical consistency of effectiveness. But by every indication, the .380 ACP is less likely to stop an attacker, even with multiple hits, than common service calibers like 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP. If you're going to trust your life to something smaller, there's always a good reason not to go for one of the "real" caliber. This is reason enough for many to keep the Glock 42 as a serious self-defense tool.

I'm always a fan of the Crimson Trace laser on any pistol, but it's especially useful when paired with a small carrier gun.

Ets Glock 42

The .380 ACP caliber has grown in popularity in recent years, not because it is so effective, but because it is the most effective cartridge that can be chambered in a small rifle like the popular Ruger LCP. If the only reason to carry a .380 is so you can carry the smallest gun possible, it's not hard to see why the first reaction to the Glock 42 is criticism of its slightly larger size.

But at the same time, the concealed carry market as a whole is starting to realize that guns under 10 ounces are notoriously difficult to shoot. And as I mentioned above, even a single 16oz stack of 9mm is too much for most casual shooters. Pistols like the Glock 42 fill that void. Yes, it throws some pretty small bullets at uncomfortable velocities, but it does so with a gun that most shooters can learn to shoot well enough in the time it takes to train someone to check the recoil and muzzle of a 9mm pocket. or nosed .38 special.

Ideally, I wouldn't recommend the Glock 42 (or any other .380 ACP) to anyone as their first choice for concealed carry. But the ideal is not the reality.

We all know that most permit holders don't practice often and tend to struggle a bit with concealment and holster selection. The stiff recoil only made him less motivated to practice, and the bigger guns made him less capable. The Glock 42 is a good compromise for someone who has enough shooting experience to carry a gun competently and safely, but who probably doesn't do it very often.*

But I don't want to give the impression that the Glock 42 is just a gun for beginners. While I usually carry a double stack of 9mm, there are things that get in the way and carrying a smaller gun makes life so much easier. For example, when I'm walking around the neighborhood or running errands, I often carry a Ruger LCR loaded with five .38 Special +P point blanks.

The Glock 42 is just small enough to qualify as a pocket, but I prefer to use the same type of holster for any handgun I carry. I just noticed the Glock attachment in the IWB holster.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much time with the revolver over the years, and the last time I picked up an LCR for a while, it was clear that the double-action trigger wasn't what it used to be. The Glock 42, on the other hand, is just as comfortable to carry, but is more like a junior version of the striker-fired pistol I regularly shoot. It doesn't have the same punch as other guns, but I'm pretty sure it can pack 7 fast rounds at any center of mass spit.

Most of the guns reviewed in this Lounge have been borrowed from friends, purchased specifically for review, or sometimes on loan from firearms companies. They are usually resold or returned after inspection, but this time I thought I would spend some money out of pocket to keep the Glock 42. That would be my second choice right now. The M&P9c I usually carry is a lot. I hate to sound cliche, but the Glock 42 "just works".

What a difference this makes in a Glock 42. With the original Glock Mags, I have no control. Installing the +2 mag extension on the black has now given me a full grip. The gun feels more comfortable in the hand. Better weapon control and looks great.

Great product. However, the video that shows you how to install the extension is worth watching. After cutting the tab.
